What are Phrases and Clauses?
A phrase is a group of words which makes sense, but not complete sense. Examples are: in the corner, on the roof, under the bed, in the morning etc.In the sentences given below the group of words given in bold text are examples of phrases.
- The sun rises in the east.
- There is a cat on the roof.
- Show me how to do it.
Clause
A clause is a group of words which forms part of a sentence, and contains a subject and a predicate. In the following sentences the groups of words given in bold letters are examples of clauses.- People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
- We didn’t go out because it was raining.
