Sentence



Subject and Predicate



         
     SUBJECT AND PREDICATE :--
  ========================

 Every sentence has two essential component parts :--
 1. Subject :-- The part which names the person or thing we are speaking about.
   -------------
 2. Predicate :-- The part which tells something about the subject.
   ----------------

   For example :--
   ------------------

 1. Rustam was a brave man.
  
    Rustam---Subject
    was a brave man---Predicate

 2.New Delhi is the capital of India.
 
   New Delhi---Subject
   is the capital of India---Predicate             

 3.The singing of the birds delights us.  
 
   The singing of the birds---Subject          
 
   delights us---Predicate  

 4.She has a good memory.
 
   She---Subject
 
   has a good memory---Predicate

 Note:-
 -------
  
   (i)  * The Subject usually comes first but occasionally it is put after the Predicate as,

      (a) Here comes the beggar maid.
  
          the beggar maid--- Subject
  
          Here comes--- Predicate

      (b) On the top of hill lives a hermit.
 
          a hermit--- Subject
         
          On the top of hill--- Predicate

  
   (ii) * In Imperative sentences the Subject is left out; as,
    
      (a) Stand up.( Here the Subject YOU is understood.)

      (b) Get out.( Here too the subject YOU is understood.)

    KINDS OF SENTENCES :--

  1. Declarative Sentences
  2. Interrogative Sentences
  3. Imperative Sentences
  4. Exclamatory Sentences

  1. DECLARATIVE SENTENCES :--
    =======================
      These  sentences make statements or assertions; as,
      * The moon shines in the sky.
     
      * The sun rises in the east.
    Note :--
   ----------
      . A statement may be in the Affirmative or in the Negative; as,
      * Babita is a beautiful girl.
      * We should not tell a lie.
     
  2. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES :--
     =========================
      These sentences ask questions; as.
      * Where do you go ?
      * What is his name ?

  3. IMPERATIVE SENTENCES :--
     =======================
      These sentences express commands,requests,or entreaties; as,
      * Go in or you'll catch cold.    [suggestion]          

      * Please give a glass of water.  [request]


  4. EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES :--
     ==========================
      These sentences express strong feelings; as,
      * What a beautiful girl !
      * Hurrah ! We won the match.
