Use of since /for

কাজের ব্যাপ্তি বোঝাতে অর্থাৎ কোনো কিছু কতক্ষণ ধরে ঘটেছে বা ঘটছিল কিংবা ঘটছে বোঝাতে আমরা কোন Tense ব্যবহার করব তা নিয়ে সমস্যায় পড়ি। এক্ষেত্রে আমাদের যে জিনিসটি মনে রাখতে হবে তা হচ্ছে কোনো কিছু যদি অতীতকালে শুরু হয়ে অতীতেই শেষ হয়ে যায় তাহলে আমরা Past simple tense ব্যবহার করব। আর যদি তা অতীতকালে শুরু হয়ে এখনো পুরোদমে চলছে বোঝায় তাহলে Present perfect continuous tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। এ ছাড়া যদি কাজটি অতীতকালে শুরু হয়ে সম্প্রতি সমাপ্ত হয়েছে কিংবা এখন চলছে বোঝায় তাহলে আমরা Present perfect simple tense ব্যবহার করি। আমাদের আজকের আলোচনা এসব খুঁটিনাটি ব্যাপার নিয়েই। আর কোনো কাজের ব্যাপ্তি বোঝাতে আমরা How long ব্যবহার করে প্রশ্ন করি।

for : When we use for and the present perfect, we are talking about periods of time that are not finished. We need to say how many hours, days, weeks etc.

[অসমাপ্ত সময়কাল বোঝাতে আমরা কোনো বাক্যের সঙ্গে for এবং present perfect tense ব্যবহার করি]

১. I have worked here for five days/for three weeks/ for six months/for a long time.

[আমি এখানে পাঁচ দিন/ তিন সপ্তাহ ধরে/ ছয় মাস ধরে/ দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে কাজ করছি। এর অর্থ হচ্ছে আমি এখনো প্রতিষ্ঠানটিতে আছি]

c. since

We can also use since to talk about periods of time that are not finished. We use the present perfect and say when the action started[অসমাপ্ত সময়কাল বোঝাতে আমরাsinceও ব্যবহার করতে পারি। এক্ষেত্রেও present perfect ব্যবহৃত হয়। তবে এক্ষেত্রে কোনো কিছু কখন শুরু হয়েছে তা উল্লেখ করতে হয়]

1. I have been here since November/since 2004.[নভেম্বর বা ২০০৪ সাল থেকে আমি এখানে আছি]

There are other ways to say when the period of time started.

1. I have been interested in engineering since I was at university.

[ইউনিভার্সিটিতে পড়াকালীনই আমার ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিংয়ের প্রতি আগ্রহ সৃষ্টি হয়]

d. How long...?

We can ask questions about periods of time with How long...? [সময়ের ব্যাপ্তি অর্থাৎ কোনো কিছু কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছে বোঝাতে আমরা How long এর সঙ্গে present perfect ব্যবহার করি]

A : How long have your been with the company? [আপনি কতদিন ধরে এই কোম্পানির সঙ্গে আছেন?]

B : I lave been here for nine months. or I have been here since January.
