Rule-1: Some nouns are always plural in form and they take plural verbs.

Rule-2: When ‘and’ is used to link two subjects or nouns and expresses a singular idea, the verb will be singular. Such as—
a) Early to bed and early to rise makes a man wise.
b) Mutton and rice has been arranged for the gusts.
c) The rise and fall in human life is very natural.
Rule-3: There will be a singular noun and a singular verb after ‘one and a half’.
Such as—
a) One and a half mangoes does not meet the demand.
b) One and a half bottles of drink is not enough for twenty boys.
Rule-4: If two clauses are liked with lest there will be should before the verb after the subject.
Such as—
a) Write everything lest you should fail in the exam.
b) Walk fast lest you should miss the train.

Rule-5: If each or every is used before a singular subject, the verb will be singular.
Such as—

b) Every boy and every girl is present in the class.
c) Every person has a mobile.
Rule-6: One-third, two-thirds, three-fourths, half, lots take singular verbs when they are followed by singular nouns with ‘of’. But they take plural verbs when they are followed by plural nouns with ‘of’.
Such as—
a) Three-fourths of the work is/has been finished.
b) Two-thirds of the students are/have been promoted.
c) One-third of the village is/has been affected by the flood.
d) Half of the road is/has been pitched.
