How to Form Sentences

Clauses to Sentences
There are four different types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex.
Simple - one independent clause
Compound - two independent clauses
Complex - one independent clause combined with one or more subordinate clauses
Compound-complex - two independent clauses, plus one or more subordinate clauses, combined with a semicolon, a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction, or a semicolon followed by a conjunctive adverb and a comma.
Here is a list of conjunctive adverbs:
  • however
  • nevertheless
  • instead
  • still
  • on the other hand
  • furthermore
  • moreover
  • in addition
  • therefore
  • consequently
  • as a result
  • likewise
  • similarly
  • otherwise
  • in fact

Here is a list of coordinating conjunctions:
  • and
  • but
  • for
  • or
  • nor
  • yet
  • so

Here is a list of correlative conjunctions:
  • either...or
  • neither...nor
  • not only...but also
